15 Mar Top Seven Bathroom Ideas for 2019: Transform Your Bathroom into an Oasis
If you’re like most people, you probably think of your bathroom as a pit stop on the way to someplace else. In the morning you might be rushed, flitting from the sink to the shower and then out the door. At night you may just do the bare minimum required to get ready for bed after a long day. But the truth is that your bathroom has so much more to offer, and you can make the most of this room by shifting your thinking: rather than always treating your bathroom like a way station, why not consider it a destination in itself? This shift in perspective, combined with some simple and inexpensive additions, can turn an ordinary bathroom into a luxurious oasis. Consider these seven ideas:
Gather Some Greenery
Plants make wonderful accents in the home, because of both their beauty and their health-boosting abilities. While you may already have plants in places like the living room or kitchen, the bathroom is also a great spot to introduce some flora. It’s important, however, to make sure you choose species that do well in bathroom conditions (i.e., warm temperatures, high humidity, and low light). According to Better Homes & Gardens, there are lots of plants that will thrive in the bathroom, such as orchids, golden pothos, spider plants, and air plants. For an extra design touch, select pots that match your décor.
Get Creative with Scents
Burning candles in the bathroom may sound obvious, but there are ways to take your candle game up a notch. Candles in the bathroom can serve various purposes: covering up unpleasant smells, providing relaxing lighting, serving as décor accents, and adding aromatherapy. You don’t want the scent to be overpowering, so choose something light and fairly neutral, such as a linen- or rain-scented candle, or alternatively, go with an aromatherapy candle in your favorite scent, such as lavender or lemongrass. Candles in glass jars and votives are recommended, as you won’t have to worry about dripping wax, and you may prefer soy candles to wax, as they typically burn cleaner and longer.
You can also burn essential oils for aromatherapy. All EliteSteam steam shower generator kits have a special divot in the steam head for placing aromatherapy oils.
Add Some Art
Who says you can’t enjoy artwork in the bathroom? A few well-chosen pieces can accentuate the atmosphere and give you something to gaze at while you brush your teeth or soak in the tub. Just be aware that repeated exposure to heat and humidity can damage certain materials over time, so Architectural Digest recommends keeping artwork simple and inexpensive, and maybe even incorporating some sculpture, which is less vulnerable to humidity than paper artwork. Another option is vinyl wall stickers, which come in hundreds of styles and colors and can be customized to match your décor. Best of all, they’re easy to remove and won’t damage paint, tile, or wallpaper.
Upgrade Your Bathmat
Chances are you haven’t given much thought to your bathmat, but it’s an easy place to make an upgrade to both the look of your bathroom and your daily experience there. Don’t settle for a bathmat that’s too small or too thin or never seems to dry out. Instead, take some time to measure the space and select a material that is soft, absorbent, and quick-drying. Cotton bathmats are popular, but you may prefer the feel of microfiber or memory foam, which are both synthetic. If you want a natural, non-fabric alternative, you might consider a wood or bamboo bath mat, which will be long-lasting and mold-resistant and won’t require laundering.
Bring In Seating
Aside from the obvious porcelain seat, there aren’t many places to sit down in most bathrooms. But a small, comfortable seat can make a wonderful addition, giving you a place to towel off, apply lotion, or paint your nails in a leisurely fashion. A cushioned chair or ottoman is a good choice, since it won’t take up too much space but will still provide comfort and, in the case of an ottoman with a removable top, maybe even some storage. A bench beneath a window makes for a nice place to enjoy natural light.
Try Some Tunes
Listening to music or a podcast while you get ready in the morning or unwind at night is a great way to customize your bathroom experience, and it’s easier to do than you might think. Even if you don’t have a built-in stereo system, you can take advantage of other options, such as a showerhead speaker, a waterproof Bluetooth speaker, or waterproof wireless headphones—all of which are easy to use and relatively low in cost. Depending on your mood and the time of day, you can choose something upbeat, like pop music; something informational, like news radio or a podcast; or something calm and soothing, like classical music. You’ll be amazed by how easy it is to set the tone for your day or night with just a little listening.
